Commissioned by Toyota Motor Corporation, a long-standing partner of the brand, Yamaha Motor has developed a 5-litre V8 automotive engine that runs entirely on hydrogen. Hopeful news for the future of (two-wheel) mobility.
Last November, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Subaru Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, Mazda Motor Corporation and Yamaha Motor jointly announced that they would begin discussions to conduct joint research on fuel options for internal combustion engines in the pursuit of carbon neutrality.
“Hydrogen engines offer the opportunity to be carbon neutral while keeping our passion for the combustion engine alive,” proclaimed Yamaha Motor President Yoshihiro Hidaka. “By collaborating with companies with different corporate cultures and areas of expertise and expanding the number of partners we have, we aim to be at the forefront of the future.”
The V8 hydrogen engine is based on the 5-litre engine from the Lexus RC F Luxe and, with changes to injectors, cylinder heads and intake manifold, among other things, delivers an output of approximately 450 hp at 6,800 rpm and maximum torque of 540 Nm at 3,600 rpm .
Striking in the specifications is the term ‘Kanno Seino’, which means ‘sensual (or exciting) performance’. For example, the 8-in-1 exhaust manifold of this hydrogen engine would produce a unique harmonic and high-frequency exhaust sound. We certainly think it works, because we can’t deny that we are slightly excited about this news!
