As you probably already know, Xbox is a company that is trying to offer its entire library through backward compatibility, both physical and digital. Thus, Sarah Bond, president of Xbox, has revealed a new division focused on game preservation.
Through an email sent to employees, Bond spoke about the future of the company. Here he not only mentioned that the development of the next Xbox console is already in process, but they have also created a new division focused on the preservation of their games. This is what he said about it:
“We have formed a new team dedicated to game preservation, which is important to all of us at Xbox and the industry itself.
“We are building on our strong history of providing backward compatibility to our players and remain committed to presenting the incredible library of Xbox games for future generations of gamers to enjoy.”
While this is a valuable practice, let's remember that digital preservation is just an illusion. Eventually, the servers have to shut down, and all games that are available digitally will be lost. True preservation is physicalsomething that Xbox is gradually leaving aside. On related topics, the Xbox 360 digital store has its days numbered. Likewise, these are the new titles for Xbox Game Pass.
Author's Note:
True preservation is physical, and unless Xbox decides to re-release physical games, then they are not achieving their goal. However, Microsoft is one of the few companies that could keep servers alive that offer all of the company's games in a digital form.
