Xbox is one of the few companies that is constantly bringing its experiences to everyone. This is not only done through Game Pass, but they also have control focused on users with some type of disability. Now, It has been announced that a new control for this public is already on the way.
This same week, Xbox announced a collaboration with ByoWave, as part of its program known as Designed for Xbox, which offers us a control focused on people who can only play with one hand, all under the name of Proteus Controller. This accessory is modular, where they present us with different cubes, each one with sticks, buttons and more, and the user can arrange them in the way they like best. This is the product description:
“The Proteus Controller all-in-one kit allows players to create their own way of playing. The unique modular kit features innovative ‘attach and play’ pieces that connect easily and come with everything gamers need to play their favorite Xbox and PC games right out of the box. With this kit, players can create over 100 million traditional and custom setups, as well as LED lighting variations.”
The Proteus controller will be available at some point in the fall season this year, there is no exact release date at the moment, and It will be priced at $299 dollars, although those who pre-order the product now can get a 15% discount. In addition to all the necessary hubs, the kit will include a USB-C charging cable and a Bluetooth dongle.
For now, Proteus will only work with Xbox consoles and Windows 10 and 11 PCs. Unfortunately, ByoWave has confirmed that support for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch is not available, but the company is open to future collaborations with these two companies.
This is not all, since Xbox has revealed that the Adaptive Controller they launched in 2018 will receive an update that will add support for more accessories, and each USB port will soon offer support for up to 12 buttons, a second device, and more. Although there is currently no release date for the firmware update, Xbox Insiders will be able to enjoy these improvements in the coming weeks, followed by a release to the general public in future months.
Remember, The Proteus Controller will be on sale in the fall of this year and will only be compatible with Xbox and PC. On related topics, a new Xbox controller is on the way. Likewise, a thematic control of X-Men ’97 will come to Xbox.
Author’s Note:
Of the big three companies, Nintendo is the only one that doesn’t have some kind of controls for the disabled public, which is strange considering its history with health accessories. Maybe this will change in the future, but for now, the Xbox Adaptive Controller is the only thing that can be used on the Switch.
