Platform claims that the return was due to a “change in network provider” and that access should soon be down again
The institutional profile of X (ex-Twitter) said on Wednesday night (September 18, 2024) that it was back up and running on some of its servers in Brazil after changing its network operator.
The social network reported that the change “resulted in an inadvertent and temporary restoration” of the network, which has been blocked since August 30 by a decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court). The expectation, according to X, is that the service will become inaccessible again “shortly”. The network says it is negotiating with authorities “so that she returns to the Brazilian people as soon as possible”.
Moraes ordered the suspension of X in Brazil. However, Brazilians abroad continue to have normal access to the platform. This is how the Poder360 read the message posted on the social network and replicated it in this text, as it is of public interest and has journalistic relevance.
An assessment by Abrint (Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Providers) says that the return of X for some users in Brazil was motivated by an update to the application that made blocking more difficult.
In a statement, the association stated that the update was made during the night of Tuesday (17.Sep) and that Elon Musk’s social network now uses a system that links IPs – a unique address that identifies a device on the Internet or on a local network – to the service. Cloudflare.
This service, in turn, makes IPs dynamic and interconnects electronic addresses with other types of services such as banks and other digital platforms. Read the full from the note (PDF – 266 kB). Understand what Cloudflare is here.
REMEMBER
OX was blocked by order of Moraes on August 30, after the social network failed to present a legal representative in the country. He also prohibited the use of the software to circumvent the block, with a fine of R$50,000 for non-compliance. On September 2, the 1st Panel of the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the decision.
The suspension of the social network is yet another chapter in the long dispute between Moraes and billionaire Elon Musk, owner of the platform, which has been dragging on for months.
On August 17, X closed its office in the country and laid off all local employees. Then, on August 28, Moraes ordered Musk to appoint a legal representative in Brazil or risk taking X offline. The billionaire did not comply with the order, and Moraes ordered the suspension of the platform.
