The most recent episode of X-Men 97 showed us that a new villain was responsible behind the Genosha massacre that claimed the lives of Gambit and Magneto. This villain is known to fans as Bastion. But to understand where it comes from we have to talk about another named Nimrod.
Nimrod is a fairly advanced sentinel robot that comes from the dystopian future of the Days of Future Past series. His first appearance was in the comic The Uncanny X-Men 191 where we saw his story. From there we saw its history and how it came to be today.
Rachel Summers and Kate Pryde learn of its creation and attempt to sabotage the Nimrod project. However, they fail and the villain manages to kill Pryde, while Summers travels to the past. The sentinel tries to follow her but his calculations fail and he arrives twenty years earlier than planned. Therefore he decides to look for an alternate version of Forge and forces him to create a time machine to reach his destination.

Forge complies with creating the machine but using it leaves Nimrod damaged and disabled. It is here that he is found by William Stryker, who activates him again. Once again the robot goes looking for Forge to make him another time machine. However, a trick by this mutant and a battle with the New X-Men causes Nimrod to get lost in the past again.
How did Nimrod end up becoming the great enemy of the X-Men: Bastion?
Eventually in his time travels, Nimrod encounters Master Mold and the two merge. This after Nimrod joined the X-Men because his experiences made him stop seeing mutants as a threat. Xavier's group along with the sentinel robot try to defeat the reborn Master Mold.
The battle takes a lot of work for them but eventually Nimrod manages to contain Master Mold. He even convinces him that the only way to defeat the mutants is to self-destruct. To avoid the effects of the big explosion, both are forced into a magical portal where they both end up united to create the character Bastion, whose story we will tell later. Did you already know about this whole process of Nimrod?
