X-Men 97 gave us some surprises in its seventh episode. One of them was the revelation that the mutant group has a new villain to fear. This is Bastion and like other evildoers in the series, he has his past in the comics. Here we tell you who he is and how he came to exist.
Bastion first appeared in X-Men #52. In his first appearance he was introduced as a mysterious man named Sebastion Gilberti, an agent of the United States government who rose very easily in a very short time. Thanks to this, he was able to establish OZT: Operation Zero Tolerance, a military operation focused on eliminating mutant threats.
This sudden promotion caught the interest of Xavier and his students. On one occasion, Jean Gray and Gambit infiltrated a government meeting to find out more about Gilberti. Here it was revealed that he was more than he seemed as he was quickly able to spot them in the crowd, in addition to Jean not being able to read his thoughts.
As part of the OZT plan, Gilberti invented a new class of sentinels, the prime sentinels. He subsequently activated them and used them to capture some members of the X-Men. However, an investigation by J. Jonah Jameson as well as the use of these sentinels results in Gilberti being placed in the custody of the US government.

After his capture he managed to escape and return to the place where he created his new sentinels. There he came into direct contact with the Master Mold, which he used to create them, which activated his hidden memories. He was not born as a human, but is a fusion of Master Mold with the advanced sentinel of the future, Nimrod.. That's why he hates mutants, because he shares the same 'programming' as the two beings who created him.
What can we expect from Bastion in X-Men 97?
The series of X-Men 97 already introduced Sebastion Gilberti and his OZT. So we could expect that in the next episodes he will carry out this operation and also that his past will be revealed.. This character may even be the key to Spider-Man's appearance in the mutant series.
Months ago it was revealed that Spider-Man from the 90s series exists in this same universe. ANDSince the investigation that reveals Gilberti's past is from J. Jonah Jameson, Peter Parker's boss at El Clarín, it is very possible that it is the connection to unite both Marvel properties.
Of course, even without the appearance of Spider-Man, Bastion will surely be very important. After all, he is one of the most dangerous and imposing villains the X-Men have faced. We'll see how they bring their story to the screens. Did you already know him?
