X plans to make likes private to improve user behavior and provide protection from trolls. Public likes soon to be a thing of the past?
The popular social network X (competitor of threads) has announced that it will fundamentally change the way likes are presented. This measure is intended to positively influence users’ behavior and offer them more privacy. A developer at X explained that public likes often lead to unwanted behavior. For example, many users hesitate to like extreme or controversial content because they fear reprisals from trolls or want to protect their public image. These concerns mean that some content does not receive the attention it deserves, which affects engagement on the platform. The company also recently had a… Decline in sales at X to fight, the reason for this is a setback in the advertising business, like NEXTG.tv reported.
What will change on platform X
In the future, users will have the opportunity to like posts without their likes being visible to others. This should not only lower the inhibition threshold for liking content, but also improve the “For You” algorithm. This algorithm uses the likes to display personalized content, which is intended to be optimized by the new regulation. Also Instagram tested hiding like activity in the past and wanted to promote data protection.
Visibility of likes
It is expected that the number of likes will remain visible, but without the information about who gave these likes. The content creator could potentially still see who has liked their posts, while keeping this information hidden from other users. This change aims to protect user privacy while increasing engagement rates.
This function is currently not available to all users. In particular, non-payers cannot hide the “Like” tab in their profiles. It remains to be seen whether and when this change will be rolled out to all users. The developers are working on implementing this privacy setting across the board.
The planned change to X could represent a significant improvement to the user experience. Increased privacy would allow users to interact more freely and use the platform more intensively without fear of negative consequences. Whether this measure will bring the hoped-for success will become clear in the coming months.
