With the first position of the Rally of Spain firmly in the hands of Thierry Neuville, the focus was on the duel for the lowest step of the podium, involving Dani Sordo and Sébastien Ogier.
The Hyundai Motorsport driver gave a very precise signal in the first morning test on Sunday, the last day of the race, which was held in the dark. Sordo won the Santa Marina 1 of 9.10 kilometers and managed to overtake Ogier in the general classification of the penultimate event of 2021.
Sordo stopped the clock in 5’05 “5, while Ogier did 1” 7 worse than him. This result brings the Iberian to third place, with a margin of half a second on the 7-time WRC world champion. An important change not only for the different composition of the podium, but also – if not above all – for the fight for the world title.
In this moment Ogier would lose more points towards Elfyn Evans and would be forced to give everything in the Power Stage to try to reach Monza with a good haul of points over the only remaining rival, his teammate Elfyn Evans.
It should not be forgotten that Hyundai Motorsport still has the mathematical possibility of reassembling Toyota Racing in the Constructors’ World Championship. Sordo in front of Ogier would give a little more hope in view of Monza.
Gus Greensmith is trying to legitimize the sixth position in his hands due to the misadventures of Adrien Fourmaux – excellent fifth in SS14 – and Oliver Solberg paid yesterday. Thanks to the seventh time the Briton of the M-Sport team increased his margin against the Swede of the 2C Competition team, now 2 “6 behind him.
