The World Meteorological Organization expects average annual global temperatures to temporarily exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in at least one of the next five years.
The organization also expected, in a report issued today in Geneva on the occasion of World Environment Day, which falls on June 5 of each year, that the average global near-surface temperature for each year between 2024 and 2028 will be higher by between 1.1 degrees Celsius and 1.9 degrees Celsius. From the baseline 1850-1900, indicating that it is likely (86%) that at least one of these years will record a new record in temperatures, surpassing 2023, which is considered the warmest year.
