World leaders will meet from Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly, which is discussing several files.
Over the course of about a week, about 150 heads of state or government from all over the world are giving speeches during this annual meeting, which is being held for the first time in person, after it was conducted online in the past two years due to the crisis of the Covid-19 epidemic.
Traditionally, the US president speaks on the first day of the meeting since his country is the host country for the United Nations Headquarters. But exceptionally, as happened on very rare occasions in the past, US President Joe Biden, who attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral Monday in London, will not deliver his speech on Tuesday and postponed it to Wednesday.
For his part, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will deliver the opening address of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
“We are meeting at a moment of great danger for the world,” Guterres said Monday, referring to “climate conflicts and disasters” as well as “poverty, inequality and discrimination.”
Russia’s attack on Ukraine will be at the center of this high-level diplomatic week, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s intervention via video link after receiving special permission voted by member states last week, as well as at the Security Council meeting at the foreign ministers’ level Thursday.
In an attempt to respond to the concerns of some countries, the Americans and Europeans are organizing Tuesday a high-level meeting on food insecurity, one of the repercussions of the Russian attack on Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to deliver his speech on Tuesday, according to the Elysee Palace, which indicated that the president will host a dinner with a number of other leaders.
In contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping will be absent from the United Nations General Assembly this year.
