The difference in the average gross hourly wages of men and women in the Netherlands is approximately equal to the average difference in the European Union. While the wage gap is gradually narrowing across the EU as a whole, there are also countries where the gap is widening, such as Latvia and Croatia.
Over time, the difference between the average hourly wages of men and women has narrowed in our country. A factor in this is that female employees are now more highly educated than male employees, although they still work fewer hours than men.
In 2021, men earned an average of 25.84 euros per hour, women 22.42 euros. It is striking, however, that the average hourly wages of young men and women differ little. The older the employees, the greater the gender pay gap. That can even rise to 20 percent for people over 50.
The pay gap between men and women is greatest in financial services. While 55 percent of men in this industry are highly paid, only 28 percent of women are.
