Lewis Hamilton's farewell
During a long and interesting interview with Fox News Australia, Toto Wolff spoke of the painful separation from Lewis Hamiltontelling viewers how the driver announced his decision to go to Ferrari.
“I think it was hard for him to tell me. Normally during the winter holidays we don't talk much. When he returned he asked me if we could have a coffee. He came to me for coffee, as we do at the start of every season, and said: 'I'm leaving in a Ferrari'“Wolff said, recalling those moments of disbelief.
The Mercedes manager continued: “I told him: 'Really?'. I knew he had a short-term contract, but I was surprised by the timing being so early compared to the start of the season. 'Why now?' I asked him. He replied that he wanted to take this burden off. After five minutes of shock and disbelief, I thought, 'Okay, what do we do to announce this? When?' and he goes, 'Well, I think the news is leaking out.' And so we didn't have many options“.
Wolff stings Hamilton
Toto Wolff then underlined that he was not disappointed by Hamilton, explaining that he understood the decision to take a different path, but launched some digs – with a smile – to the English champion: “I hope we can beat him on the track. First of all I can't imagine him wearing red. I don't think it suits himbut I think the image is interesting“, and concluded, with a new pinprick: “Then I told him: 'You need to keep a clear eye on our rear wing, because that's the view you'll have.'”
