Mercedes, Wolff encourages the team
After two difficult years, in which the victories could be easily counted on the fingers of one hand, Mercedes wants to face 2024 with a different attitude. Lewis Hamilton's sudden and unexpected departure at the end of the season did not discourage team principal Toto Wolff, who motivated the team to raise its head again with the W15 project presented yesterday.
Wolff's words
“Formula 1 and professional sports are characterized by constant development, which also involves setbacks. But it's important to remind ourselves that what we want is to look 10 or 20 years from now and say that this was a successful time, even if we had our problems. When you fall, you get back up. And this is what I have learned over the past three years: the ability to recognize learning when we fail to achieve our goals. This is the key to long-term success. We hate losing, but it doesn't mean we can't enjoy the challenges we face, working on our problems and what we need to do as a team. This is all part of development“, these are the words of the Austrian to Mercedes channels.
W15, no predictions
Wolff would not say whether the W15 could be a winning car. He, reading between the lines, doesn't believe it, but only the track will judge the work done at Brackley: “Formula 1 is a constant relative competition against other teams. You can have a great car, but if you drive it yourself you'll never know if you're the best. Last season we fought hard with Ferrari and McLaren, sometimes with Aston Martin, with a big gap between Red Bull and the others. I hope that at the start of the season we will be in the chasing group and hopefully we will be one step closer to Red Bull“.
“Development went well compared to the ambitious goals we set ourselves. Sometimes you can't reach them, other times you do better than you thought. But there are many aspects that we have put at the top of the priority list to make the car more drivable, whether it is handling or stability. We will only know what we have achieved when we are on track“.
