Among the most controversial moments experienced this season in the main car categories, we cannot miss what happened during the Norisring Race-2, the last round of the championship. DTM. On that occasion, in fact, we had witnessed the victory of the race and the title by the German Maximilian Götz, who had crossed the finish line first thanks to a controversial team order from the Mercedes. The Austrian Lucas Auer, in the lead until a few laps from the end of the race, had in fact let Götz pass – although the latter was not his teammate – to favor the victory in the championship for a driver of the three-pointed star, since the two protagonists in question were driven by the German engine.
An episode that had first of all indignant the president of the DTM, Gerhard Berger, who had considered him a ‘shame’ for the category. One month after the incident, the Mercedes team principal in Formula 1, Toto Wolff, wanted to reassure the hypothesis that a similar scenario could also occur in the Circus:
“From my point of view – commented the Austrian manager on the eve of the GP of San Paolo – such a thing has never happened in Formula 1. I don’t remember that one team has given up its position to another. In DTM it is a modus operandi that we have known for a long time. They started practicing it 30 years ago – he added – and this was also seen in the last race. This is something that will never happen in Formula 1“.
