A project full of love
When it debuted on the Apple II in 1981, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord by SirTech it was one of the first commercial games to try to recreate an experience similar to the Dungeons & Dragons paper role-playing game on computers. But its importance goes beyond the West, because it was also one of the titles that inspired the birth of Japanese role-playing gamesso much so that the series has remained alive especially in the East
SirTech published seven Wizardry sequels over the next two decades. As already mentioned, over the years, the popularity of the series has persisted in Japan, where various sequels and spin-offs published only for that market have been released. The Wizardry series currently includes over forty titles.
Digital Eclipse he is a studio dedicated to the historical preservation of video games, to which we owe masterpieces such as The Making of Karateka and Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story. He licensed the Wizardry trademark from the Japanese company Drecom and the copyright to Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord from the publisher SirTech, to develop a new version based directly on the code of the original version, released on Apple II.
The development team’s goal was to retain the charm of the original, but package it in more modern graphics, while introducing improvements in party management, navigation, spell casting, and combat. In short, it is an old and new game at the same time, which preserves the spirit of the original under the hood (so much so that it is possible to recall the 1981 interface during gameplay).
In Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord you must create a group of adventurers to explore a labyrinth full of monsters and traps, going in search of the sorcerer Werdna who has stolen an amulet with immense powers. It is a truly challenging title, as you will discover by delving into its intricacies. Considering that it is also translated into Italian, you really have no excuse not to try it.
