In Helsinki, the coldest winter record is being threatened. The Finnish Meteorological Institute warns of severe frost.
Of people cold tolerance will be tested in the next few days in the Helsinki region, when the frost will intensify and the northerly wind will increase the bite of the frost.
In Helsinki, this winter's cold record may be threatened, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute has given Uusimaa a frost warning for Tuesday and Wednesday.
“On Monday, the low pressure in the south of Finland will move east, and it will snow in the capital region, the meteorologist on duty describes the initial situation at the beginning of the week Jani Parviainen From the Institute of Meteorology. Maybe a centimeter of snow accumulates. There will be less snow on Tuesday.
In Kumpula, Helsinki, it was eight degrees below zero in the morning at half past eleven.
“Nevertheless, the cold is getting closer to ten degrees today,” says Parviainen. The northerly wind intensifies towards the evening and makes the frost feel clearly more biting.
“In the evening, the wind strength can be gusts of 8-10 meters per second on the south coast,” Parviainen estimates.
weather Institute warns those driving in Uusimaa on Monday of potentially dangerous traffic weather.
The reason for the warning is the blowing snow, which may reduce visibility. In addition, the roads can be slippery when light frost snow forms a slippery surface on the road due to the effect of passing cars.
Due to the cold weather, it is not possible to salt the roads. For Tuesday, the forecast promises freezing weather.
“Around Helsinki, it's around 15 degrees below zero in the morning,” Parviainen estimates. However, due to the moderate north wind, the frost can feel ten degrees colder, i.e. 25 degrees.
“Over the course of the day, the cloudiness decreases, and the sun can shine in the afternoon.”
During the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather will continue to get colder. A ridge of high pressure arrives from the west and it can significantly drop the freezing point, says Parviainen.
“In Helsinki, it can be freezing at night between 20 and 25 degrees.”
Wind is however weak. The frost reading mainly depends on the cloudiness.
In clear weather, heat radiates more easily into space. The clouds, on the other hand, reflect the heat back towards the earth.
The forecast means that this winter's freezing record may be broken in Helsinki.
The current record was set on January 7: 22.2 degrees of frost was measured in Kumpula, one degree less in Kaisaniemi.
Parviainen estimates that it will possibly get colder in Helsinki to the extent of freezing winter records.
According to the forecast, the wintry weather will continue in the second half of the week.
