There is a photo circulating of both kids, back in the eighties: Wicho always wearing a cap and glasses, Daniel F always thin and wearing black, wearing a Sid Vicious polo shirt and looking defiantly into the lens of whoever captured the image. Daniel Augusto Valdivia Fernández (Daniel F) and Luis García Hildebrandt (Wicho) have known each other for more than 40 years, but they never undertook the idea of playing both alone on the same stage.
This makes the concert that they will give together this Thursday, March 14 at the Bianca Convention Center from Barranco. Titled 'Back to school vol. 1', the occasion will bring together two singers from a rock scene that considers them legends. Both, it is evident, laugh at the label. These days they have been dedicated to promoting the event appearing in various spaces and telling the story of how they met.
“From the first time I saw him, I said: This compadre is the f… mother,” F remembers of those first meetings. The friendship progressed to episodes such as Wicho helping F in an emergency when he accidentally deleted some keyboard recordings made on tape, or some first collaborations of the future vocalist of Mar de Copas on a demo that F was preparing on his own.
YOU CAN SEE: Fernando Llanos, journalist for Canal N and América TV, was fired: “They notified me that he was no longer continuing”
As for the concert, they are both taking it very calmly. For Wicho, the opportunity is necessary to sing the songs that excite him most on his side, “and it is inevitable that there will be some Mar de Copas,” he points out, although they do not expect from him another performance of 'Mujer noche', but several covers of the sources that he himself has drawn on as an artist. “We have songs, for example, from Los Secretos, Enrique Urquijo, Quique González, two from Spinetta and two from Charly; then there is Gabinete Caligari, El Último de la Fila, Antonio Vega (from Nacha Pop).”
The F thing has a bit more mystery: as a soloist, Daniel F hasn't released anything new since 2011. “Maybe we are recording, we are recording all the time. But to set up a production, it is another path. It is another process,” he explains. “Many people think that if I have ten unreleased songs, I already have an album, and that's not the case. You need to have coherent material with each other to be able to publish it. At least within my worldview of the music”.
Will you play together on stage? Wicho says that “we don't know” F's complete songs, but F is more open to the matter. “Many things happen on stage, suddenly it occurs to us to sing together, that's in the moment.” Where Wicho has a setlist full of covers of the Madrid scene of the eighties, F prepares a battery of 'caletas' songs, “songs that are a little long, songs from the most hidden demos,” he says. “Those who are the biggest fans are those who look for songs that I don't usually sing.”
Since the news of their concert broke, many began to talk about a possible collaboration between the two on an album in the style of Fito Páez and Joaquín Sabina. “When you are with a person you admire, who has this professionalism at work, I would love it,” replies F. “It just has never happened.” It is the answer that many fans were surely waiting for.
