Erdogan won: Turkey changes its name
Turkey will be recognized by the UN as “Türkiye” and no longer with the English formula “Turkey”. The United Nations has given the green light to the official use of the country’s name in the Turkish language, which had been requested by the Erdogan government in recent months.
Ankara has long launched a campaign to promote the name “Türkiye” to the detriment of English “Turkey”. meaning turkey, but also, according to the Cambridge English Dictionary, “something that doesn’t work well” or a “stupid or foolish” person.
Generally, rebranding concerns, in fact, brands that over time decide to change to keep up with the times. Country rebrands are much less frequent, but they are not an unprecedented fact: in 2020, the Netherlands abandoned the naming Holland and before that, Macedonia changed its name to North Macedonia due to a political dispute with Greece while Swaziland became e-Swatini in 2018.
