This summer will be a real treat for soccer fans since there will be a lot of international activity and the two most important national team tournaments in the world will be held: the Copa América and the Euro Cup.
The 2024 edition of the Copa América will be played from June 20 to July 14 in the United States, while the Euro Cup will be played from June 14 to Sunday, July 14. That is, the finals of both competitions will take place on the same day.
Most of the leagues in the world have already ended, although there are others that continue their activity normally. This is the case of Major League Soccer (MLS), a league that will not pause its days and whose tournament will run normally despite providing players for teams that participate in the Copa América and Euro Cup.
What is the reason for this decision? Why does American soccer continue its activity despite the fact that most of the major leagues decide to take a break in this context?
Don Garber, commissioner of the MLS, spoke at the end of 2023 about the reason why the American league, unlike most tournaments in the world, did not stop its activity is due to the saturated nature of its calendar.
The commissioner pointed out that the MLS has multiple competitions and commitments, such as the local tournament itself, the US Open Cup, the Concacaf Champions Cup and the Leagues Cup, so it was not feasible to stop in the summer.
Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup, the MLS is competing its schedule so that the league has no activity during the competition.
