There are many people who, throughout their lives, wonder the reasons why they are not obtaining the expected results with their training in the gym. Especially in people who have been going to a gym for a short time on a more or less stable basis, with a constant frequency. They doubt if they have chosen well, if the planning is good, if the gym has good equipment or if it could be that their personal motivation is what is failing. With the help of two experts in personal training we try to answer the question of why you are not reaping the expected fruits of your preparation in the gym.
“Many people would answer this question that nutrition, the type of training, its intensity… and they would not be wrong in any way,” says Roberto Hernández, CEO of Bâtard Crossboxing Studio. However, the expert believes that there are two “much more important” initial factors: have a clear objective and manage realistic times. “Without these two things it is very difficult to move forward and achieve results,” he points out.
Regarding the Claro objective, Roberto Hernández explains that “it is essential since, depending on your objective and how you start with it, the structure and composition of your training and nutritional guidelines will be very different.” Furthermore, he adds, “if you don’t have a clear objective you can be blindsided for a long time.”
Regarding realistic times, the CEO of the Madrid training center indicates that “in fitness, realistic times are essential.” This is how he develops this argument: «in a society of immediacy in which we live, we want everything quick and easy and in fitness this is not usually the case. You have to avoid miracle diets or exercises that guarantee incredible results in the short term. It is clear that if you have never trained and you start doing it you will notice changes quickly but the idea we have at Bâtard is that it be consistent over time and that it ends up being a routine that changes your mentality,” he explains.
David Utrero, regional director of Synergym Spain, a gym chain that has just opened its 104th facility in Spain (20 of them in Andalusia), where it has 250,000 members, focuses on motivation. «The aesthetic and health goals that we want to achieve are not necessarily related to what you are capable of mentally supporting. Maybe you can’t weigh even if you want to gain muscle massbut you can do guided classes. Therefore, the most important thing initially is that you get the hang of it, that you are able to adhere to physical activity,” he says.
Added to these factors are others that, according to the two specialists, also influence. «From the installation itself, the machinery being of low quality, something that is very important for us at Synergym, to the poor service, which is also very important. And then, from the person’s point of view, you may not be able to pick up a habit for whatever reason,” says David Utrero.
Roberto Hernández, for his part, remembers that «Fitness results are a union of many factors without a doubt: your objective, the time to achieve it, the demands you dedicate to it, perseverance, focus, a nutritional plan according to your objectives…
David Utrero also focuses on food. «When a person is new to the gym, that is when they improve the most, proportionally the changes and improvements are abysmal. Initially, you will notice many changes with strength training. Another thing is that you go to the gym to walk around or look at your cell phone. Now, food is key at all times,” he adds.
Tips to change the trend and get the most out of your training
Due to the confluence of several factors that may be preventing you from getting the most out of your training in the gym, and with the aim that you can change the dynamics and that the results can begin to be noticed, the CEO of Bâtard Crossboxing Studio recommends wearing objective measurements about what each person wants to achieve.
As an example, he explains that, if the main objective of training in the gym is an aesthetic issue, “we recommend doing a bioimpedance weighing (not just weight since it is not a reliable factor in isolation), measuring body parts, take photos and check progress…” And if the goal is strength or endurance, says Hernandez, “it is best to make notes of your progress in certain exercises to see how you improve your marks: weight, speed, number of repetitionsbetter time…”
The regional director of Synergym Spain prefers to refer especially to those people who have less experience in the gym or who do not fully assimilate the physical activity in your daily routine. Share with them a message that is as basic as it is true, advice that is often forgotten in so many facets of life, including sport: “Have fun.” In the opinion of David Utrero, «when you do a sporting activity the most important thing is that you have a good time. If you don’t like it and you can’t get yourself to like it, you’re not going to get it. People who are not professional athletes have their jobs, their families, their children, the house to take care of, the shopping to do… to find time if you don’t like it,” he reflects.
Roberto Hernández, on the other hand, prefers to prioritize consistency. «Always giving more importance to consistency to end up gaining adherence. Objectives are normally achieved with perseverance, not with motivation.». But he also emphasizes, as advice, that it is essential to choose an activity that you like. «We are clear; Choose a sport or activity that you enjoy and like; Otherwise it will be impossible to adhere to training,” he says.
In any case, the CEO of Bâtard Crossboxing Studio believes that the solution does not involve applying an isolated piece of advice, but rather a combination of several. «Have a clear objective and adapt all factors to achieve said objective: nutritional plan, type of training, training load, rest and putting all your focus on achieving it“, says.
The most common mistakes
For Roberto Hernández there are three common mistakes among people who start training and do not achieve the expected results in the gym.
First of all, the lack of consistency. “Normally everyone starts with motivation but it is difficult to create a routine since life is usually very complicated,” says the CEO of Bâtard Crossboxing Studio. «Motivation is a great activator but it always ends; Consistency will be what makes you achieve great results,” he adds.
In this sense, Hernández considers that «You can always take 3-4 hours a week to train and, if not, later you will have to spend many more hours healing.
On the other hand, for the sports specialist, the second common error that he contemplates is the level of demand of the training. For Hernández, it is key in this sense to “train the number of times necessary to achieve your goals. And within each workout do it in the necessary way; “Don’t go visit the gym.”
Furthermore, thirdly, it puts the focus back on food. “Having a nutritional plan according to your goal and your condition will maximize your training and make you progress much further,” argues the CEO of Bâtard Crossboxing Studio.
How to choose a gym for your workouts
Both experts believe that the choice of gym is one of the factors that most influence when it comes to achieving the expected results with training.
David Utrero, regional director of Synergym Spain, mentions two types of factors to take into account when choosing a gym: its facilities and human team on the one hand, and the proximity of home or work on the other.
Regarding the first thing, as an expert in gyms that he is, Utrero says to pay attention first of all to “that there is attention, and Let this be as personalized as possible because we are not the same to others and even we ourselves change every week. And secondly, he assures that it is key to look at the machinery that the center has. «There are very cheap ones but you are risking the health of the client. It is essential to have premium brands in the sector such as Hammer or Technogym, which is what we have in our gyms, because we are clear that we are talking about the joint health of clients, whether they are injured or not,” says the regional director of Synergym. Spain.
Furthermore, David Utrero emphasizes the importance of the gym being close to the home or workplace. “It is increasingly clear that if people have to take a car or the bus (to go to the gym) it is much more complicated for them to do so,” he concludes.
