They were called Vanessa Gatti and Roberto Biancon the two hikers who lost their lives in Piedmont because of one Avalanche which, unfortunately, gave them no escape. They were in the area of Lake Toggia when they were reached by a snowdrift that overwhelmed them. With the 53-year-old and the 30-year-old there was also their dog, which is missing and which the search teams continue to look for.
They identified the two bodies found under an avalanche in the area of Lake Toggia, in the upper Val Formazza, in province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in Piedmont. The two hikers, found at an altitude of approximately 2200 metres, were swept away by an avalanche.
They were Roberto Biancon, 53 years old, and Vanessa Gatti, 30 years old. Both came from Legnano, in the province of Milan. On Sunday 7 January they ventured to very high altitudes together with their dog.
Shortly before midday on Sunday 7 January 2024 an avalanche occurred between San Giacomo pass and the Toggia alp. An avalanche of snow of impressive dimensions which, in its rush towards the valley, hit the two hikers from Lombardy.
The couple was venturing into the mountains for a snowshoe hike. Immediately i guardians of the local dam, who witnessed the scene, called rescuers. Who unfortunately could not help but recover the bodies of the two hikers.

The two hikers swept away by the avalanche were originally from the Legnano area. She was resident in Origgio, while he was in Arluno. They both loved the mountains and often went out hiking together.
Roberto Biancon was an osteopath, Vanessa Gatti was an employee. Some witnesses say that that day they had also taken the dog on the excursion with them. But no trace of the animal has been lost.
