The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recovered the body of Brazilian Michel Nisenbaum, along with that of two other civilians who were participating in the Supernova festival on the day of the Hamas terrorist attack, on October 7. The hostage, born in Rio de Janeiro, was considered alive until now.
Michel, 59 years old, had dual nationality and had lived in the country for more than 40 years, having lived for the last seven years in the city of Sderot, located close to the border with Gaza.
He emigrated to Israel at the age of 13 with his family and there he had two daughters and was the grandfather of six grandchildren, although he never met the last one.
Nisenbaum was kidnapped in the Mefalsim area on the day of the Hamas surprise attack. He was driving to the IDF Gaza Division base near Re’im to pick up his granddaughter, who was with her father in the service, but was surprised by terrorists on the way and never made contact with her family again. Since then, he was considered a hostage.
His car was identified by Israeli authorities charred on a road in the border region with the Palestinian enclave.
Despite his background in computing, Nisenbaum’s last job was as a tourist guide in the country. He has also worked as a driver, delivery man, salesman and service provider in the area of training, IT.
In interviews last year with the Brazilian press, Michel’s family said that he was a present grandfather, very close to his grandchildren.
One of the Brazilian’s daughters, Hen Mahlouf, said she was “heartbroken” since receiving the news of her father’s death. “Who would have thought that this would be our story, that this would be its end. Our daddy, my heart is broken,” she posted on her social media.
The Forum for Hostages and Missing Families stated that the Brazilian was “a man of many talents” and, in addition to his professional work, he was also a volunteer with Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency medical and disaster service, where he worked as a driver. ambulance, and the Border Police.
