Since federal deputy Pedro Paulo (PSD) gave up the possibility of being nominated for vice-mayor of Rio de Janeiro, along with pre-candidate for reelection Eduardo Paes (PSD), new names have emerged as possible candidates to fill the spot on the ticket. The most promising is Paes’ former secretary and state deputy Eduardo Cavaliere, who is 29 years old.
He is one of the mayor’s closest subordinates and worked as an aide-de-camp in Paes’ campaign for state governor in 2018. Before that, Cavalier graduated in law from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) and held the position of municipal secretary of the Environment of Rio between 2021 and 2023.
He quickly gained the trust of the mayor’s inner circle and of the incumbent himself, and ended up becoming secretary of one of the most important departments in public administration: the Civil House. In the same year, he took over the department and was elected state deputy with 33,600 votes, but ended up opting for the state executive branch.
Cavaliere is seen as a pragmatic, loyal and strict politician. Despite the qualities that have earned him Paes’s sympathy, he is not well-liked among the local political class, who believe that he spends little time with the Chamber – despite his explicitly political position. He occupied the Civil House until the beginning of June, when the TSE determined that politicians must resign in order to run for election.
Although he was not the first option for Paes’s ticket, he was the second: Cavaliere was seen as a “plan B” in case the mayor faced any difficulties, such as Pedro Paulo’s withdrawal.
