Meta Eyes 5% of EssilorLuxottica. Goal: Expand Smart Glasses Partnership After Ray-Ban Success Meta
Meta Platforms is reportedly studying an investment to acquire a 5% stake in the eyewear giant EssilorLuxotticawith a view to broadening the bet on smart glasses beyond the Ray Ban Smart already in production.
The news is from Financial Times according to which the company led by Mark Zuckerberg would be willing to acquire this minority stake which could be worth around 4.3 billion dollars.
A move that would follow recent negotiations between the two companies and the ambition of Half to broaden the collaboration beyond the Ray Ban Meta successfully launched on the market last year.
In fact, if the first version of the smart glasses Ray-Ban Meta launched in 2021 had been received coldly, the latest version launched last October has “sold more in a few months than the old glasses did in two years”.
The news was given a few days ago by the CEO of EssilorLuxottica, Francis MilleriThe new version allows users to live stream directly from the glasses to their followers on Facebook and Instagram and is equipped with Meta AIwhich can provide information about the object the user is looking at. There is currently no certainty that negotiations for an expansion of the partnership will be successful, according to what was reported by FT.
Meanwhile, this week EssilorLuxottica announced the acquisition of the American streetwear brand Supreme for 1.5 billion dollars. Some speculate that the Franco-Italian group is also interested in launching a new version of Supreme Smart Sunglasses always in collaboration with Halfthus targeting an increasingly younger audience. The eyewear giant has a market capitalization of approximately 86 billion euros.
