Next Sunday we will welcome the month of Decembertraditionally marked by celebrations. It’s time to get together with friends and family to welcome the new year or celebrate Christmas.
But before the end of December arrives, this month allows you to ‘warm up’ with the Bridge of the Constitution or Purísima. This begins on December 6, the day that commemorates the approval of the Spanish Constitution of 1978, and ends on December 8which commemorates the conception of the Virgin since she was born on October 8 and it is estimated that, counting the nine months of gestation, she was conceived on December 8.
Both December 6 and December 8 are national holidays. However, this year the day of the Immaculate Conception falls on a Sunday. Although it is a non-substitutable holiday, some communities have chosen to move the holiday to Monday. That is, citizens of some regions of Spain will enjoy a four-day long weekend while the rest will have more of a long weekend.
Where is December 9th a holiday in Spain?
December 6 will be a holiday throughout Spain. Regarding the Immaculate Conception, in total, there have been seven autonomous communities that have decided to move the holiday from December 8 to Monday the 9th. In them, workers will generally not have to go to work. They are the following:
-
Andalusia
-
Aragon
-
Asturias
-
Castile and León
-
Estremadura
-
Murcia
-
Melilla
On the contrary, the rest of the communities along with Ceuta have decided to maintain their holiday calendar and will operate as a normal day.
The beginning of Christmas
These holidays kick off Christmas. In fact, during this long weekend – or long weekend for those who do not have the party – it is usually the one chosen by many families to set up the tree and the nativity scene and the rest of the Christmas decorations.
The next national holiday in Spain after December 8 will be Christmas Day, December 25.
