The consequences of DANA in the Valencian Community – with damage still impossible to fully measure – have forced the suspension of five matches in the first round of the Copa del Rey, all involving teams from that region. Originally, they were going to be played last week, along with the bulk of the day, but the storm forced their postponement and relocation on the calendar, along with the Xerez-Ceuta and Chiclana-Osasuna matches, which were also affected. However, these two matches can be held on the new scheduled date.
The postponed matches are SD Ejea-Hércules, Pontevedra-Levante, Parla Escuela-Valencia, Manises-Getafe and Jove Español-Real Sociedad. Of all of them, the latter still has no rescheduling date, due to the European commitments of the San Sebastian team.
The DANA has also had an impact on other tournaments: two matches in the third round of the Queen’s Cup and two others in the Copa del Rey futsal have also been postponed.
It was the Valencian clubs themselves who requested this second postponement, with the intention of focusing their efforts on providing support to those who have been affected by the storm. His request was accepted by the Competition Judge: «With the persistence of the emergency situation, together with new inclement weather and the lack of restoration of some communication routes, the impossibility, for reasons of force majeure, of the celebration of these matches.
The RFEF’s resolution comes when the echo of complaints about the League’s decision to maintain last day’s matches has not yet died down, except for those that were to be played in the Valencian Community. There is not a single actor in Spanish football who has spoken out in favor of playing. The indignant reaction of Ferran Torres, born in Foios, resonates, who requested not to attend the Barça-Espanyol, very affected by the situation. Or the visibly moved images of Vicente Moreno, Osasuna coach and native of Masanasa, one of the most affected municipalities. The coach has received permission to remain in his hometown for as long as he considers while helping with the cleaning tasks, and will not sit on the bench for his team against Chiclana.
“Football is in the background,” Valencia said in a statement. How much longer remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Valencia Basket has already announced that it will travel to Thessaloniki this Tuesday to play the Eurocup. And Valencian tennis players, such as Roberto Bautista or Pedro Martínez, have not withdrawn from the Moselle Open, in Metz.
