WhatsApp users will be able to transcribe audio messages, as Mark Zuckerberg announced this Thursday through his channel. Specifically, the founder of Meta has shown his excitement in “incorporating this experience, perfecting it and making it more fluid.” So far it is known that the reading of voice files starts with a handful of languages, including Spanish, along with English, Portuguese and Russian. To activate the feature you need to go to Settings, then Chat and finally choose the option Voice message transcriptions. However, this long-awaited functionality will gradually reach the terminals in the coming weeks, without rush or pause.
As soon as this tool is available, people interested in transcribing a voice message should press and hold the message and tap the “transcribe” option. Transcriptions are then performed on the device, so personal voice messages remain end-to-end encrypted. That is, absolutely no one other than the user themselves – not even WhatsApp – will be able to see, listen to or read them.
Accustomed to dropping surprises every quarter, WhatsApp sources explain in a statement that “voice messages allow you to connect with friends and family in an even more personal way.” However, on many occasions, we are in a meeting, in the middle of an activity in a noisy place, or we receive a long voice message and we simply cannot stop to listen to it. Given these use cases, the messaging platform allows users to participate in conversations regardless of what is being done.
As is customary in the messaging service owned by Meta, the platform will indicate read receipts for voice messages based on the configuration enabled in your privacy settings.
Transcription of voice messages may take a few secondsbut it could also log an error, usually caused by one of these reasons: the transcription language settings do not match the voice message language settings; some words may not be recognized due to background noise; or the voice message language is not supported.
