WhatsApp aims to comply with updated European regulations, offering more choice and transparency to users, plus new tools for control.
WhatsApp has begun notifying users about the new terms of use that will come into force fromApril 11, 2024in order to align with the Digital Markets Act (DMA),
The DMA is one European law which aims to promote competition in the digital sector, with a focus on “gatekeepers”, i.e. the large online platforms that control access to digital markets.
In addition to the request for interoperability coming from Europe, which would allow users to exchange messages and files with third-party messaging apps, in the Terms of Use it is possible to find guidelines and regulations on the use of the application, together with new requirements compliant with current laws.
Lowered age
First of all, the minimum age to use WhatsApp in the European area changes, reduced from 16 to 13 yearsthus harmonizing the minimum requirements globally.
Relatively, parents will receive More tools to monitor your children's activity on WhatsApp and limit access to certain features, promoting “conscious and safe use of the platform”.
As for the Channelsnew specific guidelines will be introduced for their management, with registration limits and content moderation in order to combat misinformation and abuse.
New ones will be implemented reporting procedures for content that violates the rules or for those who spread harmful content, helping to create a safer and more inclusive environment.
Users will have the opportunity to appeal in the event of removal of content or suspension of the channel, protecting the right of free expression.
Intransigent EU
WhatsApp also confirmed changes to the mechanisms of data transfer on an international scale.
For users in the EU, WhatsApp will adopt the EU-US regulatory frameworka new agreement that aims to make transfers of personal data from European users to the United States more secure.
This agreement requires US companies to self-certify with the US Department of Commerce, committing to the principles of the Framework and limiting US intelligence access to personal data only to what is strictly necessary and proportionate.
The new regulations will apply to new registered WhatsApp users starting from February 16, 2024.
For users already registered before this date, the changes will come into effect on April 11, 2024.
The complete changes can be found in Terms of use updated, in the new general Privacy Policy and in the supplementary version for WhatsApp Channels.
WhatsApp is also introducing new features for all users of its messaging app, such as artificial intelligence photo editing and the ability to record videos of up to 1 minute, already present in the latest beta versions.
