Luis Rubiales, former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, was released this Wednesday, hours after being detained upon arrival at the Adolfo Suárez-Barajas airport in Madrid, from the Dominican Republic.
Rubiales is being investigated for “alleged criminal acts associated with business corruption, unfair administration and money laundering.”
Press versions assure that the contracts that are under the scrutiny of the authorities have to do with the celebration of the Spanish Supercioa in Saudi Arabia and with the remodeling of the La Cartuja stadium, in Seville.
In addition, Rubiales faces a possible sentence of two and a half years in prison for the forced kiss of the player Jenni Hermoso in the celebration of the women's world title won by Spain.
For that action, The Public Ministry accuses Rubiales of two crimes: sexual assault and coercion, for the fact that he had pressured Hermoso to justify and approve the kiss, against his will, as revealed by the AFP agency.
“The Civil Guard, the Police and the State Security Corps and Forces are doing their job, which is to pursue crime and the criminal. The mere existence of this operation shows that the judicial system works and that is already a guarantee for the celebration of the World Cup,” declared Felix Bolaños, Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts.
They read Rubiales his rights, took his statement and then intercepted his mobile devices, according to sources linked to the case told the Efe agency.
What's next for Rubiales after being released?
Rubiales was free for now, but the process continues. The next step will be to make a statement before the judge who is following his case of possible corruption, on a date that should be determined in the coming days.
The judge has already blocked 52 bank accounts of different people linked to the case, some of them belonging to Rubiales. In addition, she ordered the seizure of a Mercedes Benz car, property of the leader.
“The head of the Investigative Court number 4 of Majadahonda (Madrid) agreed to the blocking of these financial products at the request of the Civil Guard and with the aim of 'guaranteeing the possible' economic responsibilities derived from the crimes attributed to those investigated, such as disloyal administration or corruption in business,” published Efe.
The judge also blocked accounts of Francisco Javier Martín 'Nene', a friend of Rubiales, and Tomás González Cueto, the leader's former legal advisor, as well as some of Francisco Oliva Juárez, director of Gruconsa, the company to which Rubiales assigned the remodeling of the La Cartuja stadium.
Rubiales gave an interview that will be revealed on Wednesday night by the Spanish channel La Sexta. In a preview of it, the former leader stressed: “My money is the product of my work and my savings.”
