Saint Joseph Pignatelli, an 18th century Spanish Jesuit, was born in Zaragoza in 1737 to a family of Italian descent. In 1753, he decided to join the Society of Jesus, founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola. After the final expulsion of the Jesuits in 1771, he took his final vows. In 1803, he was appointed provincial of the Jesuits in Italy, where he carried out important reforms for the restoration of the Ignatian order. However, he did not see this restoration, as he died in 1811, just four years before the Order was officially reinstated. His remains rest in the Church of the Gesù in Rome.
