Today, May 7, marks International AIDS Orphans Day, which seeks to highlight the plight of millions of children who have lost their parents to this devastating disease. This commemoration seeks to raise awareness and promote actions that guarantee the well-being of these vulnerable children around the world.
The origin of this event dates back to 2002, when Albina du Boisrouvray, founder of FXB International, an organization committed to supporting orphans and vulnerable children, proposed the creation of World AIDS Orphans Day.
Since then, this date has served as platform to promote the defense of the rights and needs of children affected by this disease.
At the moment, More than 95 percent of AIDS orphaned children live in extended or foster families, many of whom face precarious economic conditions or even extreme poverty. Of particular concern is that a significant percentage of these children are in sub-Saharan African countries, where access to health resources and services is limited.
Despite advances in HIV/AIDS funding, prevention and treatment, there is still much to be done in terms of supporting these families and communities. FXB International, in its commitment to the defense of children’s rights, advocates for a more equitable distribution of resources allocated tothe fight against AIDSensuring that at least 10 percent of funds go to supporting orphans and vulnerable children.
The work of FXB International is not limited only to raising awareness and promoting inclusive policies, but also translates into concrete actions. Through programs based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, the organization has benefited more than 18 million children and adults around the world.
Additionally, FXB has established a global coalition of mayors and elected officials, with the goal of strengthening support for the rights of the most vulnerable children. More than 800 municipal leaders from 41 countries have joined this initiative, demonstrating a collective commitment to the protection and well-being of children affected by AIDS.
