There second season of What If…? was welcomed by fans with many good intentions, not only for the very good visual quality of the animated series, but also for the excellent formula that the first season was able to propose. Today we are talking to you in review of season 2, which saw – as only the House of Ideas has been able to do over the years – connect the dots in a way that was nothing short of perfect with the first season of What If…?. Between returns, new eras and new faces, here's what these new episodes have in store for us.
The multiverse is in danger again!
Even though the first season seemed like it a sort of “anthology” of the multiverse, at least up to a certain point, had reached that climax which brought everything to a more than unexpected, but to say the least, welcome connection. Well, even in this second season structure remained the samealthough this time there was one contamination a little different from one episode to another. Above all, however, and even more importantly, in this season 2 we find a character who actually acts as the protagonist, who she is the only hope of saving the multiverse: as the title suggests, let's talk about Captain Carter.
In keeping with the form of the past, this season also consists of 9 episodes of about half an hour eachwith the first two that we can define as “warm-up”, while with the others from the third onwards that slowly begin to build what is the common thread of this new “mission”.
From Gamora to Peter Quillfrom Hela to Nebulaup to a surprising new entry which KahhoriMarvel wanted to give the right space to everyone in these episodes, but then made it clear – explicitly – from the fifth episode onwards that the story would revolve around our dear Peggy.
Crazy adventures and a mission to accomplish
It cannot be said that What If…? Season 2 was not able to entertain usand above all, as the format dictates, to give us some alternative scenarios compared to those that manifested themselves in the reference universe. Some episodes obviously succeeded better than others, and in their own small way also kept us in suspense, especially due to some truly unexpected and twists (which is not exactly easy to do in just 30 minutes).
The pace of each episode is streamlined, another trademark, but on a couple of episodes in particular your attention may waver. Luckily there is also no shortage of carefree moments and the nice implications (we'll finally see Happy Hogan in its purple rind), but it will really get serious when the time comes to be serious, because the stakes are huge.
Especially in the last two episodes they will be there many cameos and participations which connect to the events of the first season, so as to weave the thread welland all thanks to the participation of a very specific character which we won't reveal to you if you haven't seen the season yet. However, the biggest problem with Season 2 of What If…? is in the lack of a real sparkwhich will make everything even more interesting.
Let's not get ourselves wrong, let's not take back everything good we said, but especially in the final lines – more than in season 1 – the lack of “space” was heavily felt to tell, and having to stick to the length of the individual episodes (in short, the same problem you usually have when you create a film by adapting a book ed.).
Apart from this, there are also many other things worth mentioning, such as the overwhelming power of the heroineswho without mincing words took (and deserved) the stage of the series. A powerful presence which underlined, quietly but not much, how much Disney wants to carry on its own campaign of love and respect towards the fairer sexat the same time however describing women as one strong categoryand with the necessary delicacy that never led, not even in a single episode, to making useless comparisons.
