German striker Timo Werner hinted that he might consider leaving the English club Chelsea, in order to get a greater participation opportunity, months before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Werner, 26, does not participate in the starting line-up regularly under coach Thomas Tuchel, and Chelsea strengthened the attack line by signing England international star Raheem Sterling.
“I can be happy anywhere,” Werner said in his statements to reporters in Las Vegas after the match that ended with a 2-1 victory over Club America on Monday, during which he scored the first goal.
“Of course I want to play more, and I have to do it to be in a good shape before the World Cup and to have the opportunity to participate in the tournament.”
“The most important thing is to be happy, to be happy when I play and score goals, that’s the truth and that’s what I have to take care of, and the rest of the things will come.”
Werner joined Chelsea in 2020 from Leipzig, and his contract is supposed to last until 2025.
The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 21 to December 18.
Tuchel did not want his compatriot Werner to promise more minutes of participation, and said, “We’ll see, but everyone is responsible for their situation, Timo played for 45 minutes like the rest of the players and he scored, and we move from that point.”
