Formula 1 has weight problems. This is the meaning of the speech made following the first test session, held by all the teams in Barcelona, by the Red Bull home consultant. Helmut Marko. The 78-year-old Austrian, as we know, has no particular problems in pointing the finger at others, nor in fueling controversy on the issues that he considers most relevant. On the delicate subject of minimum weight, he also tried to provide a detailed analysis on the German site Auto Motor und Sport. Taking up the reasoning made by the manager of Graz, the only two teams that should not have major difficulties from this point of view should be Alfa Romeo And McLaren.
The Hinwil and Woking projects manage to come close to the much-discussed minimum 795 kilograms expected. All the other teams, on the other hand, ‘slowed down’ by an excessive ballast of weight which, however, appears difficult to dispose of. Drivers obviously, given the choice, would like super light cars, like those that were characteristic of F1 up to twenty years ago. The engineers and designers, on the other hand, are pointing in the opposite direction. For them a minimal weight gain would avoid complicated headaches to be solved, limiting the risk of losing performance compared to direct competitors because of extra kilos. Many teams are therefore pushing to change the regulations during the race, increasing the minimum required to 800 kg and more, already for the current season.
Obviously Alfa Romeo and McLaren would be against it and undoubtedly there would be many practical problems in defining a similar modification. The German site also highlights image reasons: an F1 of over 800 kg would go too far against the philosophy of the categorywhich originally favored slim and super light cars.
