Ferrari is entirely focused on the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans, which coincides with the race of the year for the World Endurance Championship. However, the discontent over what happened in Belgium has not yet disappeared, when the two 499Ps were leading the race before a neutralization which then continued until the end of 6 hours. The subsequent decision to extend the race caught Cavallino off guard saw a potential double vanish. An episode against which Maranello is now appealing.
Atypical decision
Belgium’s was Ferrari’s best performance since the start of the year. After starting from the rear, the two 499Ps quickly moved up the group, moving into first and second position with a decent margin over their pursuers. Everything seemed to be going welluntil the accident on the Kemmel involving the Cadillac led to the display of the red flag.
With time now up, everyone in the environment expected the race to end, but against all expectations the race direction decided to make up for lost time. The two Reds were the ones who paid the price, as they still had to stop and had to give up the lead when they restarted. Immediately after the race Cavallino had lodged a protest for the decision taken, a request however initially judged inadmissible.
The appeal
Ferrari, however, is not there and presents an official appeal against the events in Spa. This was confirmed by Antonello Coletta, whose words were reported by Sportscar365: “We filed a complaint and an appeal. At this moment I prefer not to report any details. We are waiting to have a hearing and a date has not yet been set. […] It is important to know the interpretation of the rules to be sure of what will happen in the future. We have had many situations that have been interpreted differently in the past, such as at Fuji many years ago and at Sebring. We need clarity, because it can have an impact on the strategy and decisions we make. In Spa no one could imagine what happened. We were dismayed, but we are happy with the competitiveness of the car”.
