Weather The streets continue to flood in the south and sleet is intensifying – there is very bad driving in much of the country on Thursday

In the south, the temperature does not drop to frost until the weekend. Before that, there will be plenty of snow, sleet and water from the sky.

Watery the weather will continue in the coming days.

“There is no clear place anywhere in Finland between Wednesday and Friday,” says a meteorologist at the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Eveliina Tuovinen.

In the south, the rainfall of recent days has been watery, with little new snow left on the ground. As the temperature in the south will remain above zero also on Wednesday and Thursday, light frost is still not expected.

“From there, you can really rain everything that is on offer,” says Tuovinen.

Thursday a new rainfall area is arriving from the south, which may also bring snow to the south in some places.

Meteorologist on duty at the Finnish Meteorological Institute Jani Parviainen said Wednesday night that it may be snowing more at night, even if the temperature at that time is in the zero stages or a little plus. Especially inland, snow can also come during the day.

“The weather is quite variable, with low pressures all over Finland,” he says of the days to come.

weather Institute warn motorists very bad driving due to snow or sleet and slushy roads. The warning is valid from 2 am on Thursday in Uusimaa, Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme, Kymenlaakso and South Karelia. There may be a lot of snow in some places.

Driving conditions are at least bad on Thursday in most of the rest of Finland as well.

The daytime temperature is above zero on Wednesday and Thursday in the south of Oulu, which knows watery rains in large parts of the country no later than Thursday afternoon.

“Yes, you can still get a hit there anyway. At least sohjo can be postponed, ”says Tuovinen.

The highest rains will hit the eastern part of the country on Wednesday and Thursday, and especially the southeast, where snowfall can be fifteen centimeters.

Until Friday by then the rainfall area is shifting from south to north, and the temperature will drop to frost even in the south. The weather will be widespread over the weekend, but there will be a chance of snowfall in the south on the weekends as well.

The winter holiday week in the Helsinki metropolitan area is likely to begin mainly in frosty weather. Next week seems to be getting drier.

“Low pressures will continue to move next week as well, but their more precise movements will become clearer,” Tuovinen says.

For pedestrians the rains do not bring relief to slipperiness for a moment. The Finnish Meteorological Institute warns on Wednesday of very slippery sidewalks in the southern and central parts of the country. Water on ice increases lubricity.

“Wet snow can erode the ice layer on the sidewalks, which can help improve the situation, but the situation will only clearly start when the temperature is well below freezing,” Tuovinen estimates.

Driving conditions are also poor or very poor on Wednesdays and Thursdays due to slipperiness and snow and sleet throughout the country, with the exception of northernmost Lapland.

Down south the mild weather and rains of recent days have melted the snow so much that deep water ponds have appeared on the streets in some places. There is no promise of relief in the very next few days.

“The situation starts to calm down on Friday as the snow stops melting. On Wednesday and Thursday, the ponds are still our nuisance, ”says Tuovinen.
