The severe weather warnings continue: Large parts of Germany can expect heavy rain, thunderstorms and violent storms in the next few weeks.
Frankfurt – May has been unusually warm for a spring month, but rain and thunderstorms have dampened the joy. In parts of Germany, heavy rain has led to life-threatening storms, floods and landslides. This changeable weather situation is expected to continue in the coming weeks, and the risk of flooding remains.
Long period of severe weather: Meteorologist predicts heavy rain and thunderstorms until June
It’s a constant up and down. First the sun shines, then it rains heavily. This situation will “continue like this for quite a while,” predicts meteorologist Dominik Jung in his “scary forecast”. Weather.net“This means that there will be thunderstorms and severe weather warnings in Germany every day.” Severe weather potential remains high until June 8th. A strongly fluctuating precipitation curve is expected. At the same time, temperatures can sometimes rise to over 30 degrees.
Germany weather: “Munich low” brings heavy showers and thunderstorms
“On Thursday (May 23rd) we can breathe easy in places. However, things remain changeable: in the northeast, east and southwest of Germany there are sometimes heavy showers and thunderstorms. The temperatures range between 18 and 22 degrees,” explains Jung.
Storms can occur as early as Thursday afternoon in the greater Munich and Augsburg area, reports The Weather Channel. On Friday night, the so-called Munich low will move north with thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy showers and thunderstorms.
Weather in Germany: Storms, heavy rain and squalls predicted
On Friday (24 May) severe storms are expected again: “Until Friday evening there will be rain spots over the middle of the state from North Rhine-Westphalia to Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria,” explains the meteorologist from Weather.net. Parts of Thuringia can also be affected by heavy rain. At the same time, temperatures in the west drop to 16 degrees. Loud German Weather Service (DWD) also predicts gusts of wind and hail up to 2 cm – especially “over northern NRW, as far as the middle and into Saxony.”
Nationwide severe weather warning: Weekend marked by heavy rain and thunderstorms
On Saturday (May 25th) there may be heavy showers and thunderstorms across Germany, said Jung. Some regions will be spared from the storm, while others will face floods and landslides. The temperatures rise again to 19 to 25 degrees.
On Sunday, May 26, sunshine will alternate with showers and thunderstorms. There is a high risk of severe weather throughout Germany, according to the expert. Temperatures will be between 21 and 26 degrees. The following days will not be any different from the weekend weather. It will remain changeable, with a high probability of further severe weather fronts.

Rain and thunderstorms: Weather in Germany like a “wet sponge”
The DWD warns that warm, humid air masses can cause larger amounts of rainfall in regions. In some places, 40 to 50 liters of rain per square meter can fall in a short period of time. The sewer system cannot absorb these amounts of water, which leads to flooding.
The cause of the changeable weather is the “stationary weather.” The low pressure areas move very little, which repeatedly leads to heavy thunderstorms in the same places. “There is a lot of precipitable water in the atmosphere – and it wants to get out. It is being squeezed out like a sponge,” explained Jung. “That is why there is a regional risk of heavy rain” – until next month. (hk)
