The president of the Spanish Government made the letter public after the judge of the Investigative Court number 41 of Madrid summoned Begoña Gómez on Friday, July 5, in the case opened by alleged crimes of corruption in the private sector and influence peddling.
The judicial summons is part of the preliminary proceedings in which the judge investigates a series of public contracts awarded to companies owned by Juan Carlos Barrabés, professor of the master’s degree at the Complutense University that Gómez co-directed.
The magistrate opened proceedings against Gómez following a complaint from the self-proclaimed far-right ‘union’ Manos Médicas, which was based on press reports and which the Prosecutor’s Office asked to archive.
The opposition calls for Sánchez’s resignation
After learning of this summons, the conservative Popular Party (PP), the main opposition group, called for the resignation of the President of the Government and its leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, demanded that Sánchez “assume his responsibility” after his wife’s summons.
“Any president with a minimum of dignity would resign today in the face of this summons,” said Borja Sémper – spokesperson for the PP -, who stressed that “no country in the European Union is involved in a scandal of this nature.”

After pointing out that the accusation and the summons to testify “do not automatically imply a conviction” for Begoña Gómez, the leader of the PP said that This situation “does force Sánchez to assume his political responsibility immediately” because “there are no business precedents in the Moncloa area that are investigated by Spanish and European justice.”
“That’s what you have to do: declare and give explanations,” expressed Vox spokesperson in Congress, Pepa Millán.
Already on April 24, Sánchez, after learning that legal proceedings were being opened against his wife, sent a first letter to the public, also through social networks, in which He denounced a maneuver by the right and the extreme right against his wife, he considered resigning and canceled his public agenda for five days to take a period of reflection, after which he decided that he would continue as head of the Executive, after receiving the support of his party and his partners in Parliament.
