‘We are both absolutely calm’: Pedro Sánchez, on the judicial summons of his wife Begoña Gómez

In the letter, Sánchez denounced the existence of a “reactionary coalition” between the conservative leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and the president of the Vox party, Santiago Abascal, whom he accused of “using all the means at their disposal” to “try to condition the elections” and force his resignation based on “hoaxes”.

He also defended his wife, who he said is “a hard-working and honest woman who claims her right to work without giving it up for her husband’s responsibilities,” a right that he defends and He stated that both are calm.

The president of the Spanish Government made the letter public after the judge of the Investigative Court number 41 of Madrid summoned Begoña Gómez on Friday, July 5, in the case opened by alleged crimes of corruption in the private sector and influence peddling.

​The judicial summons is part of the preliminary proceedings in which the judge investigates a series of public contracts awarded to companies owned by Juan Carlos Barrabés, professor of the master’s degree at the Complutense University that Gómez co-directed.

​The magistrate opened proceedings against Gómez following a complaint from the self-proclaimed far-right ‘union’ Manos Médicas, which was based on press reports and which the Prosecutor’s Office asked to archive.

For his part, Núñez Feijóo stated: “what we had been saying was true. We said from the beginning that Pedro Sánchez had serious problems in his environment and that he had to face them, and with each step, each week and each day we learn facts that ratify these suspicions.”

Likewise, the Vox party celebrated the judge’s decision to summon Gómez, considering it “inadmissible” that the wife of the president of the Government is “under suspicion of a scandal of such magnitude.”
