The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), stated that he has “no regrets” about having participated with the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), in the event in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, on the morning of last Friday, 2. In reference to the PT member, he also said that “we are opponents, we cannot be enemies”.
The statement was made during an interview with CNN this Monday, 5th. Tarcísio also confirmed that there is no “political alignment” or “uniformity of ideas” with Lula.
Since the weekend, the governor has been in Europe. The objective of the trip, according to the politician, is to present a portfolio of R$235 billion in infrastructure projects for large companies in the area.
Tarcísio attended the ceremony celebrating the 132nd anniversary of the Port of Santos and announcing investments in the Santos-Guarujá Submerged Tunnel. During the meeting, the governor laughed after hearing the audience shout asking him to return to PT.
When PT activists began to boo the head of the São Paulo Executive, Lula reprimanded them. “I want to tell you, Tarcísio, that you will have everything you need from the presidency, because I am benefiting the most important state in the federation. São Paulo deserves respect and the governor deserves to be treated with great respect,” he said.
Conversation with Bolsonaro
On the same day as the ceremony with Lula, Tarcísio said that he had a conversation with former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and there would have been no discomfort with his political godfather.
“He understood that my role there was institutional. There is no approximation, no alignment. There is republican action,” he shared. “The fact of doing a project together does not mean political alignment, it does not mean alignment of ideas.”
However, the relationship between the two politicians is full of disputes. In November last year, when Tarcísio revealed that he was in favor of tax reform, former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) confessed that the relationship between the two was strained and criticized his former minister's political stance. “No, it’s not all right. I'm not in charge of Tarcísio. He's a hell of a manager. Politically, he makes his mistakes,” he said in an interview with Rádio Gaúcha.
Tax reform was the culmination of disagreements between the two. Tarcísio, who was Bolsonaro's Minister of Infrastructure and was elected governor as the former president's candidate, supported the reform from the beginning of the process and tried to persuade his former boss to accompany him.
Repercussion among Bolsonarists
The exchange of affection between the São Paulo governor and the President of the Republic also had repercussions in the Bolsonaro circle. This is the case of senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), who took to social media to comment on the meeting between the two politicians who exchanged compliments and felt comfortable on the platform. According to the parliamentarian, Lula would be “envious” of Tarcísio being with Bolsonaro.
“Praising Bolsonaro’s ministers is easy, it’s difficult to praise Lula’s ministers. It was sad when Jair Bolsonaro was president, he went to a state governed by the PT and even the PM was taken away from his security. An irresponsibility. Lula must be incredibly jealous that Tarcísio is Bolsonaro”, wrote the parliamentarian on X, formerly Twitter.
