The great competitor of the classic GoPro, or at least the action camera that is closest to it in its offer, has just launched a new version, the Osmo Action 5 Pro from DJI, which with features aimed at both athletes and to professional content creators, aims to cope with the recently launched GoPro Hero 13 Black.
The Osmo Action 5 Pro is equipped with a next-generation 1/1.3 sensor, which offers a dynamic range of 13.5 stops, allowing you to capture images with a high level of detail, in both dark and bright areas. It is capable of recording at 4K/60fps and the inclusion of advanced color profiles such as D-Log M and HLG give content creators greater flexibility for color grading, ideal for achieving that cinematic look which is often looked for in action videos.
If we compare both cameras at the same 4K resolution, the quality is similar, they have color adjustments, especially in HDR, but it is a matter of taste. Although the GoPro Hero 13 Black is capable of recording at 5.3K/60fps, that is, at a higher maximum resolution, the Osmo’s sensor size works better in low light in 4K SuperNight mode.
As for the objective, it is unique, with an ultra-wide field of view of 155º. This is where GoPro wins with its interchangeable lenses and recording in 8:7 and 9:16, which give it more versatility than the DJI camera, that is, we will not find a macro or ultra wide angle for this camera.
Up to 210 minutes of recording
DJI offers 360° HorizonSteady stabilization that ensures shots remain perfectly level no matter what angle you’re recording from, key to getting on-the-go activities, and it does a great job of generating super stable content. Although, the GoPro Hero 13 Black’s HyperSmooth is still the market leader, and in the toughest situations, it excels over the Osmo Action 5 Pro.
One of the features we liked the most about the Osmo Action 5 Pro is its improved battery, which offers up to 210 minutes of continuous recording in 4K. And in our tests, we hardly had to recharge the camera between outings, despite keeping it on for hours. Additionally, thanks to its cold resistance, the camera can continue to record reliably in temperatures as low as -20°C, something we have not been able to verify. DJI’s knowledge and experience in managing the batteries of its drones is evident, surpassing that of GoPro.
The Osmo Action 5 Pro equips two high-brightness OLED touch screens. With a brightness of up to 1000 cd/m2, perfect for use in direct sunlight. Although there is not a huge difference, on paper, the Osmo Action 5 Pro has better screens.
Perfect for diving fans
For fans of diving and water activities, the Osmo Action 5 Pro is waterproof up to 20 meters without the need for a housing, which puts it ahead of GoPro which can only reach 5 meters. Although for a freediver it is enough, for a diver 20 meters is very little, and does not make a big difference.
Another positive point that we have found in the Osmo Action 5 Pro is that, if we have its popular microphones, used by a vast majority of content creators, we can link them and they work like a charm, even recording while running or riding a bike.
The DJI Mimo application to download and manage videos is easy and intuitive to use, and a functionality that we loved are the predefined templates that, with artificial intelligence, create very attractive short videos, especially for those who do not know how or do not want to pass a lot of time editing videos.
The Osmo Action 5 Pro surpasses the Gopro Hero 13 Black in many aspects, better night image quality, longer battery life, brighter screens and is submersible to 20 meters deep, on the other hand, the GoPro ecosystem that has more than a decade in operation, the foolproof stabilization is unrivaled and the interchangeable lenses give GoPro a versatility that the DJI camera does not have.
