Arena do Grêmio is also hit and the Brazilian Championship is suspended for 20 days; the government requests the suspension of the competition
The pitch at Internacional’s Beira-Rio stadium, located in Porto Alegre (RS), was seen again this Monday (May 13, 2024) after the Guaíba level had decreased in recent days. The place, which was flooded for about a week, has a yellowish color and mud marks in the surrounding area.

Rio Grande do Sul is facing damage caused by the rains that hit the state since April 28th. According to Civil Defense, in the bulletin issued at 12pm this Monday (May 13), 147 died and 538 thousand were homeless.
The capital of Rio Grande do Sul faced the biggest Guaíba flood in history, which exceeded 5 meters and flooded part of the city, including the historic center, which is still flooded. BRASILEIRÃO STOPPED
In addition to Beira-Rio, the Grêmio Arena was also flooded. Due to the floods and the state of calamity declared by the Rio Grande do Sul government, the FGF (Gaúcha Football Federation) sent a request to the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) to pause the Brazilian Championship.
The request was accepted by the entity, which paused the matches for 20 days. However, with the worsening of the situation faced by Rio Grande do Sul, the Minister of Sports, André Fufucasent a request to the CBF to suspend the competition on May 10.
The president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues, said he respected the federal government’s request, but that the suspension of the Brasileirão would be the clubs’ decision, not the CBF’s. The entity’s positioning has been the target of criticism from fans and internet users.
“When defining a competition, the CBF holds Technical Council meetings for Series A, B, C, D and grassroots competitions. If a strike is requested, we will inform each club, each series of these clubs, so that they can take a position in relation to the document from the Ministry of Sports. And from there, if necessary, bring together the Technical Council so that they can deliberate. ‘Look, can we stop all the competition?’”, said Rodrigues at the time.
