Washington appealed to the countries of the European Union (EU) and the European Liaison Service due to the alleged pulling of the Russian army to the border with Ukraine, writes German daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung citing diplomatic sources.
The author of the article stated that the United States approached the foreign ministries of Germany, Great Britain and France at the end of last week.
The journalist clarified that Washington has passed on to its partners data on the movement of the Russian military near the borders. US President Joe Biden, on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rome, called on Acting German Chancellor Angela Merkel to increase pressure on Moscow over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, the author added.
The American Embassy in Berlin, at the request of the publication, refused to comment on the content of diplomatic contacts with Europe. The representative of the diplomatic mission said that the US “unshakable support” for the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine in front of the allegedly existing “Russian aggression” should not cause any doubts.
The Federal Chancellor’s Office said that Berlin does not like Russia’s “actions” towards Ukraine. “Moscow’s behavior is testing the strength of Germany’s patience,” the newspaper writes with reference to politicians.
Washington has previously stated about the “activity” of the Russian military on the border with Ukraine. So, on Friday, November 5, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that the US Department of Defense is tracking “unusual” tactics of Russian military personnel near Donbass. The Russian embassy in Washington replied that the American side’s interest in the movement of Russians was perplexing.
On October 30, the American newspaper The Washington Post wrote about the increase in the number of Russian troops on the border. According to the newspaper, “unusual movements” were recorded after the completion of the large-scale exercises “West-2021”. The United States recalled that they are monitoring the situation.
Similar publications appeared in other Western publications – Politico, Foreign Policy.
According to Maria Zakharova, an official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, editorial offices began to write materials against Moscow “as if on cue in a real panic attack.” She urged not to believe fakes.
The Kremlin has also reacted to reports of Russian tanks. The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, called them stuffing.
Kiev did not notice the build-up of Russian forces near the Ukrainian border. The information that appeared in the media in Ukraine was called “an element of special information and psychological actions.”
