Giovanni Ricchiuti’s appeal: “NATO has serious faults”
Archbishop Giovanni Ricchiuti, president of Pax Christi, is convinced that NATO has a responsibility for the current conflict in Ukraine and is opposed to sending weapons and to the hypothesis of increasing military spending, he said during an interview with the Everyday occurrence.
“I am still of the opinion that one of the reasons why Russia and Ukraine are in this dramatic and very serious conflict today was precisely the hypothesis of extending NATO up to Kiev.” no willingness to go and plant missiles or bases in Ukraine, it could greatly contribute to relieving tension“.
The archbishop calls the sending of weapons to Ukraine “a really sore point” e proposes a peace table in Kiev between all European leaders as a valid solution to address the conflict. According to Ricchiuti, the Pontiff too would be ready to go to Ukraine: “In my opinion he would not wait a moment to leave if there was a ‘coalition’ with him, an interposition of the unarmed”.
Finally on the question related to military spending he adds: “Politics seems deaf to the demands of young people and also to the appeal of 50 Nobel laureates, including Carlo Rovelliwho asked for a 2% reduction in military spending, calculating that a two billion dollar solidarity fund between nations could be created “.
