Volvo Trucks is developing trucks with combustion engines powered by hydrogen. Road tests with trucks using hydrogen combustion engines will begin in 2026, with a commercial launch expected later this decade. Hydrogen trucks are particularly suitable for long distances and in regions where charging infrastructure or time to recharge batteries is limited.
Volvo hydrogen engine
Volvo trucks with hydrogen combustion engines will be equipped with direct injection high pressure (HPDI), a technology in which a small amount of fuel ignition is injected at high pressure to enable compression ignition before hydrogen is added.

The advantages of this technology include greater energy efficiency with lower fuel consumption and increased engine power. HPDI technology is the result of the agreement with Westport Fuel Systems.
Hydrogen instead of diesel
Westport Fuel Systems’ H2 HPDI technology is based on the system architecture LNG HPDI; this technology replaces the mixture of natural gas and biogas with hydrogen, offering up to 20% more power and up to 18% more torque than diesel, with almost zero CO2 emissions.
Sharing many components with HPDI LNG systems already in use, this technology fully integrates the cryogenic tank and high-pressure pump onto the truck chassis, connecting them directly to the engine.

Utilizes a patented injector design double concentric needlewhich delivers small quantities of diesel and large quantities of natural gas at high pressure into the combustion chamber, injecting the natural gas at the end of the compression stroke.
Refueling is quick and the 80 kg tank it guarantees a range of 800 km, with an efficiency 5% higher than standard diesel engines.
When Volvo hydrogen trucks arrive on the road
Volvo will begin customer tests for trucks with hydrogen combustion engines in 2026, and the trucks will be commercially available later this decade. Currently, i test in the laboratory and on vehicles are underway. Trucks with hydrogen combustion engines will complement Volvo’s offering, which includes other alternatives such as battery electric trucksfuel cell electric trucks and powered trucks renewable fuelssuch as biogas and HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil).
