Will we still be talking about electric cars when all cars are electric? Or do we just call them cars? And what about the car brands? Should Volkswagen still give the cars an ID name if everything is electric? Probably not. But there is a chance that the name will disappear before all cars are electric. Volkswagen is under fire because of the ID series, because the name is already in use.
The company Identytec is a small company from Germany that makes automated machines. About twenty-five people work at Identytec and the group has been using the name ID for fifteen years. For example, the company Identytec has a type of automatic shelf filler called the ID.ADD. So it's not just about 'ID', but also the use of the dot.
A small player against Volkswagen?
Volkswagen can hardly deny that they have never heard of Identytec, because the brand has even bought some stuff from the small company. Volkswagen only applied for the rights to the ID name in 2017. In 2019, Volkswagen first objected to Identytec over having the same product name. So the case has been going on for a while.
In return for Frankfurter Algemeine Zeitung says Identytec that they are aware that as a small company they have a tough opponent: 'We are aware that this is an unfair fight'. Yet the small company perseveres. “ID products that have nothing to do with VW and their ID electric vehicles are currently causing confusion among our potential customers,” they add.
Identytec receives support
According to Frankfurter Algemeine Zeitung the small company receives a lot of support, including from the state of Lower Saxony. The interesting side note to this is that that state owns approximately twenty percent of Volkswagen's shares, as Volkswagen's headquarters are in Lower Saxony. We dare not say whether the ID name will disappear soon. We have the feeling (hah) that Volkswagen can hold out on a legal dispute a little longer…
