The Kanlaon volcano in the Philippines erupted on Monday, producing a huge plume of ash that rose up to 5,000 meters above the summit, causing dozens of flights to be cancelled. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the eruption, which occurred at 6.51pm local time, lasted six minutes and was preceded by a “strong earthquake”.
Images on social media showed a thick black blanket of smoke rising into the starry night sky. Others showed a thick blanket of ash covering homes.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, over 60 flights were canceled overnight, stranding over 5,000 passengers. Bacolod-Silay Airport resumed operations at 11 a.m. Tuesday, but delays are expected for passengers.
As the alert level on the volcano was raised to 2 out of 5, local government officials ordered the mandatory evacuation of all residents living within a 3 kilometer radius of the volcano.
Located in Negros, the fourth most populous island in the archipelago, Mount Kanlaon is one of the 24 most active volcanoes in the country. It straddles two provinces and is at the highest point on the island with an altitude of 2,465 meters above sea level.
