In the remake of Paper Mario: The Millennial Portal was gender identity restored Of Viviana character who in the remake presents herself as a trans woman: an aspect that was ignored at the time of the original localization.
Received by the international press with excellent ratings, Paper Mario: The Millennium Portal features in the fourth chapter of the campaign the presence of a dialogue in which Vivian talks about her past, saying that it took her some time to understand that she was Marilyn and Beldam’s sister, not their brother.
Precisely in light of this revelation, the character explains to Mario that Beldam’s constant bullying of him has become even more unbearable, and that’s why he decides to join the mustachioed plumber on his mission.
In the 2004 English localization, however, these items have been eliminated: Vivian only joined Mario because Beldam called her ugly and not because of the teasing related to her gender identity.
An important news
It is not known why twenty years ago those responsible for the English localization of Paper Mario: The Millennium Portal chose to edit those dialogues and leave out the question of Vivian’s gender identity.
We imagine that the reasons could be linked to the conception of the Nintendo game as a product intended for children and adults potential discussions that the presence of a transgender character could have triggered a certain type of user.
Whatever the reasons, it was basically censorship and we are therefore pleased that in the remake things have been fixed, in full respect of the original work.
