There are currently three confirmed victims of the accident that occurred yesterday at the Bargi hydroelectric power plant, in the province of Bologna, although as the hours pass, hopes of finding the four still missing workers alive diminish.
It was around 3pm on Tuesday 9 April when a transformer connected to a turbine at a depth of around 30 meters exploded during maintenance work in the Enel Green Power plant which uses the waters of the artificial lake of Suviana, in the Bolognese Apennines.
Five other people were injured in the accident and are now hospitalized with serious burns in the hospitals of Parma, Cesena, Bologna and Pisa, while three workers escaped incredibly unharmed. Search operations for the missing are particularly risky even for the rescuers, the fire brigade divers.
The explosion occurred on the lowered eighth floor of the power plant, a total depth of 70 meters, and the ninth floor was completely flooded.
“We are trying to understand what happened, we will make a technical entry into the file in the next few days to carry out the urgent investigations which are primarily those on the bodies, we will check whether it is necessary or not to proceed with the autopsies and then afterwards we will the investigations”, said the chief prosecutor of Bologna, Giuseppe Amato. In short, “we will have to understand what happened and then we will ask the consequent questions.”

The workers involved in the accident all work for external companies. None of the victims were employees of Enel Green Power, which operates the plant.
The three confirmed deaths are: Pavel Petronel Tanase, 45 years old, Romanian resident in Settimo Torinese, in the province of Turin; Mario Pisano, 73 years old, from San Marzano di San Giuseppe, in the province of Taranto; and Vincenzo Franchina, 36 years old, from Sinagra, in the province of Messina.
The latter, an electrician, leaves behind a wife and 2-year-old daughter. He got married in May last year. “Vincenzo was a very good boy,” he tells the agency LaPresse a friend and former colleague of his. “A year ago he had taken his suitcase and left his Sicily because he wanted to work. He was an electrician and always went back to his hometown for holidays.”
Mario Pisano, married with two adult children who had made him a grandfather, was well known in his home town, San Marzano: the Bari courier reports that the 73-year-old, a former Enel employee who was now a consultant, had led several local sports associations, even though he was often traveling around Italy for work. However, there is no detailed information on Pavel Petronel Tanase.
As for the workers injured in the accident, they are 25, 36, 42, 55, 59 and 66 years old. The most serious is the 25-year-old, originally from the municipality of Camugnano, where the power station is located: the young man is hospitalized with third-degree burns and is in very serious conditions.
