The Montreal weekend saw among the protagonists not only the young lions of Formula 1, such as Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, but also the old guard. Among the best of the Canadian weekend, in fact, were Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton: the Asturian with an amazing front row on Saturday, the British with the return to the podium, the second of the season. And the host Jacques Villeneuve he wanted to pay homage to them.
These are the words of the 1997 world champion on Hamilton: “A couple of weeks ago I was very critical of him, but this time I have to compliment him – wrote in his column for formulas1.nl – the car was competitive and drove very well. It is important for him to have achieved the podium. On Saturday he won the duel in qualifying after George Russell’s strange gamble, and then he got the most out of the race: he made the right decisions and he also had the speed. It’s a difficult season, and maybe that’s the boost he needed. Perhaps he has left behind the moments of despair and he is back to fight“.
Finally, Villeneuve focused on the performance of Alonso, author of the second time in qualifying: “I would like to congratulate him. It might even repeat itself: it’s still the same Alonso, but with more experience. Alpine got the strategy completely wrong and then there was also a problem on the straights. This is the story of his season, he’s competitive but Sundays often go badly. But the future is bright for Alpine, the team is getting better and better“.
